An experienced vascular surgeon treating a vascular problem

Dr. George Carty

Dr CartyDr. George Carty is an experienced vascular surgeon who has been practicing in Saginaw County, Michigan, since 1978. He completed his five years of general surgery training at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals, Saginaw, MI in 1977 and then a fellowship in Peripheral Vascular Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI in 1978.

As an active member of the medical staff of several hospitals in Saginaw County, Dr. Carty has held several leadership positions responsible for improving the quality of patient care, medical education and advancement of surgical techniques. He has been published in various medical journals.

As a full time member of the Department of Surgery at Saint Mary’s of Michigan for several years, he was involved in teaching medical students and surgical residents, receiving an award from the Surgical Steering Committee of Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals in 1992, in recognition of contributions to Resident Surgical Research.

Dr. Carty founded and for nearly twenty years was Director of the Non Invasive Diagnostic Vascular Laboratory at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. He has served as the Section Chairman for Vascular Surgery in the past.

Dr. Carty is a member of:

  • The American College of Phlebology (ACP), an association of physicians and surgeons specializing in venous disease
  • The American Board of  Phlebology (ABPh), an independent, non-profit organization founded in 2007 for the purpose of certifying physicians who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of phlebology.
  • The International Society for Vascular Surgery (ISVS)
  • The International Society of Endovascular Specialists (ISES)
  • The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
  • The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)
  • The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS)
  • The Vascular Access Society of the Americas (VASA)
  • The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS)
  • The Saginaw County Medical Society (SCMS)

In addition to his responsibilities in the medical field, Dr. Carty has always been directly involved with the community at large. In 2004, he received an award from the Michigan State Medical Society Foundation for Volunteer Community Service and was featured in "Doctors & Their Families Make a Difference," appearing in Michigan Medicine Magazine.

As a member of the Hackett–Hemwall Foundation, Dr. Carty participates in annual medical missions to the underserved people of Honduras to provide modern, safe and sustainable vein care treatment to patients who have nearly nothing and little hope of relief from their vein disease. Advanced stages of disease are commonplace and local care availability is virtually nonexistent.

In 2006, with almost 30 years of experience in the practice of Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Dr. Carty decided to dedicate his professional activities primarily to the modern management of varicose veins disease, a new and exciting frontier. Technological advancements such as the use of laser energy and innovative surgical techniques has made it possible to remove varicose veins without making an incision, all under local anesthesia, in an office ambulatory setting, thereby resulting in minimal or no scars, rapid recovery and a very short recuperation period.

In spring 2008, the American Board of Phlebology (ABPh) administered the first Board Certification Exam in phlebology. The establishment of a Board Certification Exam brings recognition to both the field of phlebology and those providers in the field who have the knowledge, skills, and experience to provide quality care to patients afficted with venous disorders. Dr. Carty holds a certificate issued by the Board designating him as a Diplomate of the American Board of Phlebology. Phlebology is the study of veins and venous diseases and disorders. Board Certified phlebologists have extensive knowledge of and training in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disorders and have met the standards of the American Board of Phlebology. Dr. Carty, was board certified by the ABPh in July 2008.  This is the charter class for the ABPh, which includes 248 diplomates nationwide.

Dr. Carty maintains a diagnostic vascular laboratory at Progressive Medical Imaging (PMI), fully accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) and staffed by registered vascular technologists (RVTs). Dr. Carty also holds an RVT credential (ARDMS) in addition to the newly developed Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) credential, each recognizing expertise in the performance and in the interpretation of vascular ultrasound studies.
